Reduce the amount of homepage code
Why this matters
HTML is the code describing a page's content and structure. A large amount can take longer to download on a phone. This check excludes separate images, scripts and stylesheets.
What to do
- Remove unused homepage sections and repeated content. Split a very long homepage into shorter pages where that makes it easier to use.
- Ask whoever maintains the site to remove unused markup, meaning page code that serves no purpose. Aim for under 500 KB of homepage HTML.
- What to tell your web developer: The fetched homepage HTML exceeds 500 KB. Please reduce it below 500,000 bytes by removing unused markup and splitting very long content, while keeping the page useful.
How to check the fix
Run the checker again and check the reported HTML size is below 500 KB. Check the page still contains the information customers need.
