Declare the language of your page
Why this matters
Screen readers speak page text aloud. Declaring its language helps them choose the right pronunciation.
What to do
- Check the main language of the homepage's text. Select that language in your website settings if available.
- Set the html element's lang attribute to that language, for example <html lang="en-GB"> for British English. This is the language setting on the outermost element of the page code.
- What to tell your web developer: Please declare the correct page language with the html element's lang attribute, using en-GB if the page is in British English.
How to check the fix
Run the checker again and look for a page language pass. Confirm the declared language matches the text; the checker only checks that a value is present.
