Why this matters

WordPress sites are attacked constantly. Keeping the main software and plugins updated matters. Plugins are add-ons that provide extra features.

What to do

1. Back up your site and check for updates to WordPress, plugins and themes. A theme controls the site's design.
2. Turn on automatic updates where practical and arrange regular checks that the site still works. Remove the generator tag that publicly announces the WordPress version.
3. What to tell your web developer: Please keep WordPress, plugins and themes updated, check automatic updates and backups, and remove the version-announcing generator tag from the page.

How to check the fix

Check the installed versions and update settings in your site administration area. Run the checker again; the advisory may disappear when the generator tag is removed, but that alone does not prove the software is updated.
